THE TESTS
The replay amplifiers of  Apple's i-phone 4, comprising DAC and headphone amp.,  had to be tested with test files of known specification (from Philips) before the AudioTools signal generator could be assessed for accuracy. Output from the i-phone was a high 1V and frequency response perfectly flat, our White noise analysis shows. Distortion measured 0.002% at high levels and 0.358% at -60dB, mostly noise; distortion components were absent. Noise (A weighted) was a little high at -91dB, but still not high enough to be audible. The i-phone 4 has surprisingly good audio stages feeding the headphone output and this in turn allowed the AudioTools signal generator to deliver 'flat' pink and white noise, or sine waves, to any device under test.
